Following a strong campaign by the West Papuan National Coalition for Liberation and the government of Vanuatu for West Papua to be given member status in the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG), it was disappointing that this week’s meeting postponed any such decision to the future. The Free West Papua Campaign held a day of action and remembrance in commemoration of the tragic events of 6th July 1998, where on the island of Biak, West Papua, over 200 innocent West Papuan people were brutally killed by the Indonesian military just for raising their national flag atop the water tower in their town…
As the campaign grows, the West Papua struggle finds its way onto the agenda of surfers in Australia, posing questions about their frequent visits to Indonesia in search of waves. Surfing campaign group Don’t Go To Indo, has been set up in a bid to encourage surfers to think twice before going to Indonesia…
The Rev. James Lawson, who worked alongside Martin Luther King, presented awards to four civil resisters. One of this year’s winners is Mkuseli (Khusta) Jack, the strategist who led consumer boycotts in South Africa. In his acceptance speech Khusta said “I dedicate this award, which is lodged deep in my heart, to the people of West Papua.”
