UK House of Lords: Spotlight on West Papua

On 13 November 2024, the UK House of Lords engaged in a special session addressing the situation in West Papua, with Lords Harries, Purvis, Gold, Lexden, and Baroness Bennett – holding the government to account on the issues of self-determination, ecocide, and the long-delayed UN visit. We need this kind of scrutiny from our Parliamentary supporters more than ever now.

It is gravely disappointing that the UK government has signed a ‘critical minerals’ deal with Indonesia, which will likely cover West Papua’s nickel reserves in Tabi and Raja Ampat. The UK must understand: there can be no real ‘green deal’ with Indonesia while they are destroying the third largest rainforest on earth.
