Solomon Islands and Vanuatu rugby league teams show support for West Papua’s freedom!
November 3, 2017
The Solomon Islands and Vanuatu national rugby league teams have come out in strong support and solidarity with West Papua’s freedom, together raising the West Papuan national flag at an international test match in Honiara.
Sollies team captain Rex Horoi said, “We know West Papua has a rugby league team and SIRL (Solomon Islands Rugby League) is making an open invitation that we want to host them here in Honiara.”
He continued “We want to bring out the West Papua flag here since the governments of both our countries stand in solidarity with our Melanesian brothers”.
Vanuatu captain James Wood agreed and said that West Papua shares a common bond with Vanuatu and Solomon Islands, being Melanesians. He added that it would be great to also see West Papua joining in test matches.
We would like to wholeheartedly thank the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu rugby league teams for their true Melanesian solidarity and incredible support for West Papua. We would also like to thank all our brothers and sisters in Solomon Islands and Vanuatu at grassroots, civil and government levels for all their strong leadership and Free West Papua support!
We are fully confident that our Melanesian family in Solomon Islands and Vanuatu will continue to stand with West Papua’s freedom. Melanesian solidarity forever!
