The ultimate aim of the Free West Papua Campaign is to give the people of West Papua the democratic right to choose their own destiny - a right they were promised, but denied, in 1969.
We are campaigning for the UN to re-run the flawed 1969 'Act of Free Choice' - this time as a genuine referendum, in which every Papuan can vote on independence. But to do this we need legislators - MPs, congresspeople, senators - from all over the world to take up the issue and press their governments to take the issue to the UN.
In Britain, we need as many MPs as possible to get involved in this crucial issue. So we are asking our supporters to write to their MPs and ask them to:
1. Raise the issue of West Papua with the British government, and ask them to support a new referendum on freedom for the Papuan people. 2. Ask the government to pressurise Indonesia to stop human rights abuses in West Papua, and to release political prisoners. 3. Ask the government to stop arms sales to Indonesia, on the grounds that British-made weapons are being used to terrorise Papuan civilians. 4. Join the All-Party Parliamentary Group on West Papua, which has recently been formed by Andrew Smith MP.
The more of our MPs we can bring on board, the more chance there is of West Papua becoming a global political issue - so please take the time to write. You can find your MP's details on this website. If you'd like more information from us, please email us on office@freewestpapua.org |
